Adrian started learning
the piano at the age of 4. At 14, he started singing lessons, and has gone on to
major in Voice at the National Institute of Education, where his teachers
included Dr Chia Wei Khuan, and where he obtained an honours degree. He was also
awarded the Association of Nanyang University Graduates Gold Medal in 2002.
As a vocal specialist, Adrian has taken part in competitions and has
performed in many recitals. At 17, Adrian was a finalist in Singapore's National
Music Competition, and he was awarded several distinctions in his diploma
recitals. He has also performed with eminent local pianist Shane Thio in several
song recitals, specialising in rarely heard repertoire. Both of them have
performed several local premieres of songs by composers such as Benjamin
Britten, Claude Debussy, John Cage, Manuel de Falla, Olivier Messiaen, Darius
Milhaud, John Musto, Andre Previn, Maurice Ravel, Ned Rorem, Francis Poulenc,
Arnold Schoenberg, Igor Stravinsky and Kurt Weill. Adrian has also performed the
tenor solo for several choral works, such as Handel’s Messiah, performed with
The Philharmonic Chamber Choir, and Schubert’s Mass in D, performed with the
National Institute of Education Choir. Recent performances include a song
recital of 20th and 21st century composers with Shane Thio in March 2006, for
the 2rd anniversary of the opening of The Arts House. Upcoming performances
include a recital of cabaret songs to be staged and directed by Singapore-based
British director Michael Corbidge, and a revue of songs by Noel Coward.
Adrian has also been active in the choral scene since the age of 14,
performing with the Singapore Combined Schools Choir and the Singapore Symphony
Chorus. With various choirs, Adrian has toured countries like Austria,
Australia, Hungary, Italy, Japan and Malaysia. He has been a member of The Philharmonic Chamber Choir, conducted by Lim Yau, since 1999, and has taken part
in numerous award-winning performances and local premieres. Recently, the choir
recorded with the international recording label BIS a performance of Zhou Long’s
The Future of Fire. With The Philharmonic Chamber Choir, Adrian has had the
opportunity to work with several world-renowned conductors as well, such as
Chifuru Matsubara, Peter Phillips and Johannes Prinz.
Apart from singing,
Adrian took lessons in percussion with Ms Ivy Tan, and was a member of the
National Institute of Education Percussion Ensemble. With the ensemble, Adrian
participated in many public performances as well as toured the United Kingdom
and Australia. Adrian was also a percussionist with the National Institute of
Education Symphonic Band and has performed in Norway for the Hamar Music Festival.
Adrian has also composed and arranged several works, and studied
composition with Dr Kelly Tang. His a cappella choral work I Sing of a Maiden
was premiered by the National Institute of Education Vocal Ensemble. Adrian has
also composed music for local playwright Michael Corbidge’s Relationships
Apocalypse, which was staged in Singapore and Australia. His most recent works,
Arirang and Hard Times Come Again No More, were premiered by the Yishun
Secondary School Choir at the 2005 Singapore Youth Festival and in Kuala Lumpur
respectively. Future commissions include the Singapore Repertory Theatre Young
Company’s production of William Shakespeare’s The Tempest.
